One Word Film Project: Process and Reflection

Basic Summary of the One Word Film Project

The One Word Film Project challenges participants to create a short film centered around a single word, AWE. The emphasis is on visual storytelling, using our creativity to express meaning through actions, imagery, and editing.

Our Approach to the Project

We approached this project with creativity and a determination to make our film stand out. From the very beginning, we focused on how we could convey our word in a unique way. Our goal was to make every shot, angle, and moment contribute to the story, allowing the audience to fully immerse in the theme.

Brainstorming Process

During brainstorming, we concentrated on how the film would come to life through the use of shots, angles, and editing techniques. We thought deeply about how to visually express our concept, breaking down each action and moment that would effectively communicate the core idea. Here's an image of our brainstorming sheet that helped us organize these thoughts:

Pre-Visualizing with a Storyboard

To bring our ideas into focus, we started by creating a storyboard. This was a critical step in pre-visualizing the project, as it helped us map out all the key actions and moments in the film. The storyboard allowed us to plan each shot in advance, ensuring we maintained a clear narrative flow from one scene to the next. This process gave us a strong sense of direction before we even picked up the camera.

Filming and Editing Resources

When it came time to film, we carefully made each shot without using words or dialogue. We also made sure to delete all background sounds, relying on visuals alone to tell the story. For editing, we used Premiere Pro, which allowed us to enhance our shots with clean cuts and transitions, keeping the audience focused on the visuals and emotions at the heart of the film.

Reflection: What Worked Well and What to Improve

What worked well:

The film’s ability to communicate its message purely through visuals was a success. We stayed true to the challenge of using no dialogue or original background noise, and the story still came across clearly.

Creativity: Our focus on unique shots and angles helped the film stand out.

What I would improve next time:

I’d like to experiment further with camera movement to add more spice to certain scenes.

Enhancing sound design could add another layer of immersion, even with minimal background noise.
